Bi-Weekly Computer Networking Industry Updates (16 – 29 July, 2012)

 #1 Ten Cat 6 Cabling Tips for Network Engineers – In this blog post, the author talks about a few network cable (Cat 6, copper cable) tips for network engineers. He talks about why cable length matters, why it is a good idea to allocate some space while installing cables so that it becomes easy to remove cables later on, why electrical conduits may not be a good choice for carrying data cables, etc.

#2 BetterLinux released for System Administrators – BetterLinux is a new Linux flavor that seeks to give a good amount of control of system resources like I/O, Memory, CPU, etc. to network administrators and helps them to detect and mitigate server resource utilization issues. #3 Why remote wiping of mobile data/applications is not a good idea – In this blog post, Fortinet talks about why remote wiping of data from mobile devices (when they are stolen or when an employee leaves an organization) is not a good idea. A number of factors against remote wiping,  including why it’s difficult to achieve in practical scenarios and how people can still circumvent the remote wiping of data, are discussed.  #4 Riverbed announces the addition of inbound QoS for its Steelhead appliances – Among other things, inbound QoS (Quality of Service) control is critical for customers utilizing public cloud, SaaS, MPLS meshed networks and networks whose users use a lot of social media sites, says this press release from Riverbed.

#5 Google Cloud Platform partner program – Since Google is a big-time cloud player, people/organizations who want to partner with Google on certain enterprise specific cloud applications might want to read this blog post from Google.

#6 Oracle releases Microsoft SQL to MySQL conversion tool – Oracle releases Microsoft SQL to MySQL conversion tool and says that customers can reduce their ROI by up to 90% by switching over to its MySQL database platform. They have also released a ‘MySQL for Excel’ plugin which allows administrators to manipulate MySQL data from within Microsoft Excel. Read more from their blog post.

#7 Websense announces the commencement of its CyberSecurity Intelligence On-Demand and Live Services – Websense now provides two new online security services – CSI On-Demand and CSI Live to its customers in order to defend themselves against new zero day attacks. These services provide access to online sandboxing services, forensic details and security expertise to customers who may need it. Read this Websense news release to learn more.

#8 Hp to bundle Cloudera’s enterprise Apache Hadoop solutions – Cloudera is an enterprise-level Apache Hadoop deployment software that enables large organizations to crunch/process big data. Together, these two vendors will be able to provide big-data solutions for visualization, analysis and data integration, says this blog post from Hp.

#9  VmWare to acquire Software Defined Networking specialist Nicira – This press release from VmWare mentions that they intend to acquire a SDN specialist called Nicira in order to create a flexible data center/cloud infrastructure that can be controlled further using software and help customers create a software defined data center.
