#1. Cisco announces Unified Access platform for enterprise networks: Cisco has unveiled a new Unified Access architecture that converges processing of wired & wireless traffic into a single data plane, based on Cisco UADP ASIC. Cisco has launched two new products on this platform – Cisco Catalyst 3850 Unified Access Switch, Cicso 5760 Unified Access WLAN Controller. Read more…

#2. Extreme Networks announces support for the new IEEE 802.1Q AVB Standard: Professional Audio-Video systems might converge with IP Networks very soon, with the advent of IEEE 802.1Q AVB standard. Extreme Networks have announced support for this standard in their switches. Read more…

#3. Dell to go private: Micheal Dell & Silver Lakes to buy out Dell common shares: In a major decision for a technology company of its size, Michael Dell (along with Silver Lakes) has decided to buy out common shares from Dell stockholders and make the company private. I am no financial wizard, but I believe that this is a positive step as it will encourage the top management to focus freely on long-term goals, without the pressures of short-term commitments. #4. Dell announces new switching platform & SDN support for its high-end networking switches: Dell unveils new S4820T top of the rack switch 1/10GE ports, 40 GE uplinks and FCoE support. They have also announced the commercial availability of OpenFlow to support SDN on some of their switches. Read more…

Ruckus introduces SmartWay and BeamFlex+ Wi-Fi technologies: SmartWay is a feature that will be added in Ruckus devices (with a firmware update) and it is used for administration and optimization of service discovery traffic like UPnP and Apple Bonjour, over Ruckus Wi-Fi networks. BeamFlex+ is a feature that will be added to select Ruckus Wi-Fi access points and they enable these AP’s to have complete control over how Wi-Fi technologies are transmitted, and in what orientation. #6. Amazon Web Services launches Amazon Elastic Transcoder: Amazon Elastic Transcoder is a new service that helps companies to transcode digital files between different media formats. For example, customers can convert their high-resolution master file into lower-resolution video files that can be used for playback in websites, mobiles, etc. Read more…

NetApp launches NetApp Certified Storage Associate (NCSA) certification program: As a part of its Academic Alliances program, NetApp launches NetApp Certified Storage Associate (NCSA) certification program, primarily targeting students of IT/CS branches thereby giving them some entry-level credentials while trying to get a job in the security industry. #10. Oracle announces availability of MySQL 5.6: Oracle has announced the availability of a new version of the open-source database – MySQL 5.6. They are also hosting the first virtual developer day for MySQL for March 12, 2013 to educate MySQL users on the latest features in MySQL 5.6. Read more…
