Weekly Computer Networking Industry Updates (June 17 – 24, 2012)

I am going to try a new weekly Computer Networking industry update/news/interesting happenings round-up. Depending on how much people might like it, I may decide to continue with this series or I might go back to (only) technology updates, as before.

1. Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Wired and Wireless LAN (from HP) – It looks like Gartner’s magic quadrant this time, includes both wired and wireless LAN vendor ratings as a single report as campus networking solutions are expected to be able to manage wired, wireless and security infrastructure, especially when it is provided by the same vendor. This time, Cisco, Hp Networking and Aruba Networks have been positioned in the leaders quadrant while Huawei has been positioned in the challenger’s quadrant. Have a look at this article from Hp detailing the same and you can access the full magic quadrant report from the end of that article.

2. SCADA and your Data Center (from Palo Alto Networks) – This is a good article on how data center network security might be interconnected with your SCADA system security. You might be familiar with recent worms like Stuxnet attacking SCADA systems. But since SCADA systems communicates with the data center, should your network security options include protection specific to SCADA networks? Innovative thinking! 🙂 Read more…

3. Gartner’s Magic quadrant for corporate telephony (from Siemens Enterprise Networks) – So, we come to know that Gartner has also released the Magic quadrant for corporate telephony. Four companies are placed in the leaders quadrant – Cisco, Avaya, Siemens Enterprise Communications and Alcatel-Lucent. Two companies are placed in the challengers quadrant – NEC and Mitel Networks. Read this press release by Siemens Enterprise Communications detailing about the same. You can also access the complete Magic quadrant report, from there.

4. Cisco WebEx Social Enhancements (from Cisco) – Corporate social network, anyone? Cisco WebEx Social (formerly WebEx Quad) is a corporate social network enabler tool with built-in collaboration options that can be hosted either in-house or on the WebEx cloud. Among other improvements, Cisco seems to have integrated their tool with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook and they allow users to post updates from within these applications. Read more…

5. Silver Peak integrates their WAN Acceleration solution with Avaya branch routers (from Marketwire, Avaya, Silver Peak) – The Avaya SR 4134 is a modular router that can accommodate a dedicated server module in order to  host and run third-party applications. Silver Peak has announced the availability of their VX family of WAN acceleration virtual appliances on the Avaya SR 4134 router. Read more…

6. IBM Smartcamp Boston winners (from IBM) – In this interconnected world of ours, we gather a lot of data from a multitude of sensors. In the end, all that data needs to make sense and help optimize processes. That’s what companies offering ‘big data’ solutions do. IBM Smartcamp Boston has identified two innovative start-ups in this field that are geared towards solving a few real-world issues like where to locate a retail store (for example) using data analytics. 7. VGA, DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort from a single KVM-over-IP switch (from Raritran) – With Raritran’s Dominion II 2.5 release, IT administrators can access and control heterogeneous devices like Computers, Servers, etc. through VGA, Digital DVI, HDMI and Display Port in a single KVM over IP switch. 8. Hybrid vs Purpose-built: FCOE vs Fiber Channel (FC) & Toyota Prius vs BMW M3 (from Brocade) – Just because Toyota Prius can achieve speeds of more than 90 Mph+, should you use it to drive that fast? That’s the question put forward by this blog post from Brocade which analyses the purpose and advantages of both FCOE and FC for storage area networks. There is one more learning outside the intended scope of that article – Toyota Prius can reach speeds in excess of 90 Mph. If you understand what I mean 🙂 The structure of this blog post is quite innovative. Read more…
