ERP on Wearable Devices

I went to an event hosted by Ramco Systems at Chennai, India (my hometown) where they demonstrated their ERP App for wearable devices like Google Glass and Pebble Smart Watch.

But first, see this introductory video on Google Glass:

And here’s the Google Glass that I saw (and saw through) in the event:

They’ve also created an ERP app for Pebble smart watch. Here it is:

Ramco Systems is a company based in India that offers ERP on Cloud, HCM on Cloud & Aviation on Cloud solutions (among others). The company currently has 20 offices spread across India, USA, Canada, Europe, Middle East, South Africa and APAC. According to their Vice Chairman & MD Mr. P. R. Venketrama Raja (who addressed journalists and Bloggers during the event), they are well poised for a global play in the Enterprise Cloud market.

Wearable Devices, although in initial stages now, may find immediate applications in the e-commerce, manufacturing, services and healthcare segments. Two application scenarios highlighted in the event were,

1. Airplane maintenance: If pilots find a discrepancy, they can record it using their tablet, which pushes it to the server after landing. The server updates the Google Glass or Smart Watch and the technician knows there is an issue, where ever he/she is. Once on the job, the ERP system can be updated from his/her wearable device. They can also access information required for maintenance (like documents/videos, etc.) right from the wearable device. The advantage is, their hands are free to work while they keep looking up and updating the wearable app occasionally. With the Google Glass, screen is displayed slightly above the line-of-sight.

2. Faster pick-up & delivery of Couriers: If the location of the courier delivery personnel is tracked using GPS systems, courier pick-up information can be sent to the nearest person, based on their location and carrying capacity at the given time. The courier personnel can receive and update their info where ever they are – as they are walking or receiving the courier.

These two applications were presented as an example, there could/would be more as the technologies and applications mature. It’s good to see an ERP app on Google Glass/Pebble Smart Watch at this early stage. It’ll be interesting to see what other applications wearable devices find in future.
